POSITION DESCRIPTION

VISION FOR POSITION

The Instructional Coach will provide instructional leadership, mentorship and direction throughout the academy. The Instructional Coach is a beacon of instructional excellence and has a record of outstanding student results. The Instructional Coach and Principal partner closely to develop strategy and provide support to all academy staff. The Instructional Coach works closely with teachers, and is a member of the school leadership team. The Instructional Coach ensures that all instructional systems, such as planning, analysis and coaching, are highly effective so that all students in their academy make significant academic growth throughout the year. The Instructional Coach prioritizes their academy’s success but also collaborates closely with campus- and network- wide instructional leaders to share, teach and provide feedback so that all students across our network have access to instructional systems that support significant academic growth. The Instructional Coach is model of professionalism and positivity and leads the academy to fulfill the school’s mission of closing the opportunity gap each day. The Instructional Coach reports to the Principal.

INSTRUCTIONAL COACH (FTE 1.0) POSITION FUNCTIONS

In partnership with Principal, ensures instructional excellence throughout the school

  • Professionally develops staff to deeply understand the skills required to master learning standards and implement school systems with fidelity
  • Works in partnership with principal to lead weekly data meetings, on curriculum based assessments and exit tickets, and weekly planning meetings with teachers using backwards design from MN State Standards.
  • Works in partnership with principal to develop scope and sequences and assessment calendars for math and science content areas.
  • Has detailed understanding of all diagnostic, summative and formative assessments; supports team leads to understand gaps and weaknesses in curriculum as related to these assessments
  • Leads vertically so that instructional methodology and assessment is aligned to the science of learning and development at each grade
  • As needed, shares resources, models instructional leadership and professionally develops teachers and leaders across the primary network

Prioritizes classroom observations and student data analysis

  • Observes coachee’s classroom weekly
  • Uses observations as a time to provide real time feedback and modeling of best practices
  • Is a positive, helpful presence when observing - leaves notes of appreciation, interacts warmly with students and teacher
  • Is prepared for each observation - can easily jump in to model effective instructional methods
  • Has meaningful relationships with students, staff and their work
  • Sets time aside each week to analyze student work and plan for frequent data meetings


Facilitates effective feedback meetings

  • Utilizes RELAY’s Observation and Feedback structure to provide teacher with feedback and practice
  • Is well-planned and prepared for each meeting with a coaching plan in hand
  • Can easily model instructional excellence during a coaching meeting or instructional period with students

Facilitates weekly, high-quality data analysis meetings:

  • In partnership with the Principal, creates a schoolwide sequence of data collection across the year
  • Follows up with team members to make sure exit tickets are tracked daily
  • Creates a weekly written plan to highlight data successes, exemplars and gaps and has pre-planned methods to reteach highest leverage misconceptions
  • Can easily model how to reteach when gaps in learning inevitably occur

Serves as an active member of the school leadership team

  • Co-plans leadership team meeting with Principal
  • Participates in all scheduled school leadership team meetings.
  • Works closely with the Principal to monitor student achievement
  • Models professionalism at all times; is available to meet afterschool to problem-solve, thought-partner and share; is a positive presence in the building
  • Is a resource for new team members (including substitutes and new students); checks in regularly, answers questions, engages other team members to support as needed
  • Is flexible and supportive of new initiatives from the principal and leadership team
  • Plans and organizes school wide events (works with the Director of Operations to plan Field Trips and other events that may impact the school’s operations)

Co-develops and co-monitors academy’s strategic plan

  • Co-creates strategic plan in response to our network’s strategic plan, schoolwide data and staff feedback
  • Works two-days per week over the summer in partnership with Principal in preparation for the school year
  • In partnership with the Principal, presents progress toward goals on Data Day

Delivers Intervention to Tier II/III Students

  • Delivers intervention to Tier II and/or Tier II III students in ELA and Math throughout the course of the year
  • Works in partnership with Principal and DOSI for creating and maintaining systems for progress monitoring students in MTSS
  • Attends conferences as needed for students in the MTSS process to lead family communication surrounding interventions and referrals to services

Instructional Coverage

  • Provides short term substitute coverage for teaching positions including classroom teachers, specials and special education teachers
  • Works in partnership with Principal and DOSI for daily and weekly coverage planning for staff

SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS, DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

General Requirements

  • At least 2 years of teaching experience with a record of exemplary results
  • At least 2 years of experience successfully leading adults with a record of significant student growth across a team
  • Preferred: RELAY Instructional Leadership Professional Development (ILPD) or RELAY National Principal Academy Fellows (NPAF)

Knowledge & Skills

  • Outstanding attention to detail and willingness to get the job done
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and implementation skills
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with multiple stakeholders
  • Able to multitask and work in a fast paced entrepreneurial environment
  • Knowledge and fluency with Google Suite
